1 FIDELITY ANALYSIS OF AN OBSERVATION SYSTEM

On the basis of describing the concept of an observation system’s fidelity, it takes a close look on the principle about why the observational system which meets the requirement of fidelity is sure to be an invariable linear system and points out that for an observation system the response function of unit pulse time as well as the transfer function area irrelevant with the quantity and quality of the input.
These functions are capable of totally representing the characteristics of the observation system. Besides, by studying the weight coefficient of observation system from the timedomain and frequencydomain along with the characteristics of transfer function, it concludes that a physically realizable observation system for sure will fail to be an ideal linear timeinvariant system. Nevertheless, given an appointed transmissional band and a certain requirement for precision, the transfer function curves will turn similarly into a level line with a phase lag approximately to zero or directly related to the frequency, which can largely meet the demands observation. Finally, it discusses the scale unit and its calibration of observation system, by analyzing a example of horizontal pendulum that derives a theoretical scale unit from the dynamic constantcoefficient linear differential equations, to demonstrate that an excellent observation system should not only has a manual method for scale unit calibration, but also a theoretical formula for the scale unit deriving and it is dependable in any reliability examinations
of whatever observation data.

7 FOCAL MECHANISM ANALYSIS OF SMALL EARTHQUAKEIN CENTRAL AND WESTERN INNER MONGOLIA

Using the method of the maximum amplitude ratio between P and S to inverse the focal mechanisms of small and medium earthquakes, and by using the digital waveform data of the small and medium earthquake occurred in the central and western Inner Mongolia from 2001 to 2008, 130 focal mechanisms were obtained. The results show that there are two groups of nodal plane in NWW-SEE and NESW. From the effect of the compressive stress in NEE-SWW direction and the tensile stress in NNWSSE direction, the NWW-SEE break side results in the right sliding, the NNW-SSE one in the left sliding. Systemic clustering analysis shows that small and medium earthquakes in the central and western Inner Mongolia were mostly with the section of vertical surface and strikeslip focal mechanism solution. By contrasting the focal mechanism of Hangjinqi and Tuoketuo Ms4 earthquakes with the background field, it is found that both of them are not precursor earthquakes. Through the analysis of consistency focal mechanism of parameters, there is a low value area of focal mechanism parameters in the central and western Inner Mongolia,it may have a certain significance to earthquake prediction.

12 STRESS ANALYSIS AND RESEARCH ON ACTIVITY CHARACTERISTICOF SECONDARY FAULTS IN SHUIKOU RESERVOIR AREA,FUJIAN

To understand the stress nature and activity characteristics of secondary faults in Shuikou reservoir area,with the focal mechanism data of 15 earthquakes which have clear and reliable Pwave first motions, we deduced the direction of principal axes of tectonic stress field in this area by using the algorithm of mechanical axis tensor, and then made stress analysis of the faults. The results show that the stress nature of only Wankou fault is compressive and the others are tensional. On the basis of crossfault shortleveling data of 6 sites in the reservoir area, we found out, by using the linear fitting method, that the Xiguazhou fault moves normally and the other move reversely. Finally, the results with the two methods were compared and discussed.

17 STUDY ON TRIGGERING MECHANISM OF RESERVOIR EARTHQUAKE BY WATER IMPOUNDMENT

Using finite element method.The stresse field and the static Coulomb failure stress changes was calculated. The calculated results show that the location of the water impoundment plays an important role in triggering reservoir earthquake. When the reservoir water is loaded right over the fault and on the hanging wall of the fault, it will promote the earthquakes for normal faults and inhibit the seismicity for thrust faults. However, the earthquakes will all be inhibited both for normal and thrust faults with high dip angles when the load of reservoir water is located on the footwall of the faults. No strong reservoirinduced earthquakes will occur despite the load of water will promote the earthquake for the faults with small dip angles when the load is put on the footwall of the faults.

22 PRIMARY COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF MAGNITUDEDEVIATION IN THREE GORGES AREA

A comparative analysis of the 231 earthquakes(MSL≥2.0)in the Three Gorges area recorded by both the telemetry seismic network in Three Gorges and the digital seismological network of Hubei province from June 2007 to December 2009 was carried out. The results show that the average magnitude from the telemetry seismic network in the Three Gorges is larger than that from the digital seismological network of Hubei province, as 2.0≤MSL<2.5, MSL is larger than MHL by 0.16 magnitude; as 2.5≤MSL<3.2,

MSL is larger than MHL by 0.11 magnitude; as MSL≥3.2,

MSL almost equals to MHL.

26 ON Qc VALUES OF CODA WAVE IN XIAOLANGDI RESERVOIR AREA

According to Aki’s singlescattering theory of coda, the coda Qc value,which is (89.2 ± 28.78) f 0.913 1 ± 0.154 3 in the Xiaolangdi reservoir area is estimated by use of the
seismic waveform data recorded by short-period instruments from Xiaolangdi Reservoir Seismic Network. The results show that threre is a strong dependence between Qc value and frequency in the Xiaolangdi reservoir area and coda Qc value is small. Refering the domestic research results, combined with the numerical characteristics of coda Qc in this area, it is found that the tectonic activity is complex and the seismic activity level is high in the studied area,so the earthquake monitoring should be strengthened.

29 ANALYSIS OF ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUMBEFORE ZHANGBEI Ms6.2 EARTHQUAKE

On the basis of the FFT spectrum and wavelet transform theory, the changing characteristics of electromagnetic wave frequence spectran of Dongsanqi station in Beijing before the Zhangbei earthquake are studied.The results are as follows.1) Anomalies did exist before the Zhangbei earthquake. 2) Anomalous signals of the electric field are more significant than those of the magnetic field, and the NS component is stronger than the EW component.3) Anomalies appeared concentrately on Dec. 31,1997 and Jan. 1 , 1998 and there were significant phase changes that it might reflect the different stage characteristics of earthquake preparation.

33 DISTURBANCE CHARACTERISTICS OF CAVE STRAIN OBSERVATIONCAUSED BY SEA TIDE AT XIAMEN SEISMOSTATION

By contrasting the geo-deformation materials observed at Xiamen station with that at the inland seismostations and excluding a variety of possible disturbing factors on cave strain materials, it is found that lots of “burr” and another hig-frequency phenomenon which superpose on the solid tide observation curves are caused by sea tide surge movement. Different from the observations of ground tilt instruments, the type of sea tide disturbance on cave strain observation is belong to vibration type.

38 RESEARCH ON HYPOCENTRAL PARAMETERS OF NINGXIA AND ADJACENT REGION

Using the Brune model (1970) and the digital seismic wave data of Ningxia and the adjacent regions, which was recorded by Ningxia seismic network, we transferred the recorded velocity spectrum into hypocenter displacement spectrum by geometry diffusion correction, dielectric attenuation correction and instrumental correction. The corner frequency and zero frequency were calculated by using genetic algorithm,further,the hypocentral parameters including hypocentral radius and seismic moment were calculated and the relationships among them were analyzed systematically. 186 earthquake events from ML1.7 to ML4.4 which occurred from June, 2003 to December,2007 were studied. The estimated results show that the relations between seismic moment, bodywave magnitude, rupture radius and corner frequency are near loglinear or semi-loglinear. Seismic stress drop and apparent stress show little obvious correlation with hypocenter radius, but display positive correlation with seismic moment. Compared with other regions, there are lower stresses released in the studied region.

44 DETERMINATION OF REFERENCE VALUE FOR ABNOMALINFORMATION EXTRACTION IN MOBILE GEOMAGNETIC SURVEY

The problem of reference value confirmation by using the traditional methods to extract seismomagnetic information from geomagnetic survey data is discussed with observational examples. A new method, which uses the mean value of F at crelible sites in the measuring region as reference value of geomagnetic field, is presented. The method increases the ratio of signal to noise, and makes the extraction of abnormal information more rational.

50 STUDY ON CHARACTERISTICS AND MECHANISM OF DEFORMATION ANOMALY AT SHANGHAI FIXED DEFORMATION STATIONS

The distances between Shanghai Songjiang seismic sequence in Novemeber,2009 and Sheshan deformation station,Chashan deformation station are about 18 km and 32 km respectively.The deformation observations appeared of different anomaly degree at these two stations before the earthquakes.The results combined the deformation data with focal mechanism solution show that the direction of the
anomaly is consistent with the direction of background stress field of this area,so we think that the observed deformation anomalies are likely to reflect the changes in tectonic stress field.

53 ANALYSIS OF DATA VARIATION OF SSQ-2 DIGITAL HORIZONTAL PENDULUM AT TAIAN STATION

The observations of digital horizontal pendulum of Taian seismostation for 10 years was systematically summarized. After excluding disturbance the typical variation of recorded data is classified and analysed.
Basically, there are four types of variation as follows: 1) wide shift, trend change;2)earth tide distortion of single day;3) multiday earth tide distortion accompanied with frequent zerodrift;4) frequent zerodrift without obvious variation of earth tide.
Trend change and earth tide alteration dominate the NS component distortion while frequent zerodrift reigns the EW component. The relation between distortion and earthquakes is that: The preearthquake distortions appear as earthquakes of magnitude lager than 7.0 with epicenter distance 2 000-5 000 km. The preearthquake distortions accompany with some earthquakes father than 5 000 km.

62 RELIABILITY ANALYSIS OF BOREHOLE STRAINMETRY OBSERVATIONS

Reliability should be the key in precursor observation. Usually, we just compare the measurements and variation with the theoretic earth tide to judge whether the data are reliable. However, the way can’t determine the consistency of data
and the longterm trend should be affirmed firstly in precursor analysis. According to the elastic mechanics theory and the observation insitu, it is shown that for a 4 components strain instrument, their component directions spread with 45 degree angle, the sums of measure values of unit 1(1#) and 3(3#) should be the same with that of unit 2(2#) and 4(4#), and the sum value is also equal to 1.3 times of the volume strain. We can calculate a value η by use of the 4 components strain measurements, its absolute value is the more close to 0, the more reliability of the observation. This way may provide a new evidence in estimation of observation reliability. In order to get more reliable observation, contrasting analysis can be held in those observatory with two type of strain instruments.Otherwise for those observatory with just a component strain instrument, self test , that 1#+3# should be equal to 2#+4#, may also be used to verify the reliability.

On the basis of characteristics of historical earthquake of the Shuikou reservoir area the feature of the earthquakes in the Shuikou reservoir area is discussed.Through the analysis of the crust deformation data observed by shortline leveling and the results of focal mechanism resolution,it is proposed that in the earlier stage of the seismicity in this area was induced by water and in the later stage it is related to the tectonic stress field strenthening.

The strain energy release rates of earthquake area in Taiwan were analyzed from M5.0 earthquake data from 1900 to
2009. The results show that there is peroidical change of strain energy release rate by three years,or may be about 24 years. The strain energy cumulation and release of the earthquake area in Taiwan show the function relation:

74 DETECTING EARTH’S FREE OSCILLATIONS BY USE OF GRAVITY OBSERVATIONS AT YICHANG STATION

By use of the digitiled observations of the DZW microgal gravimeter at Yichang station without the corections of gravity tide and prossure the spherical free oscillations of the baseband 0S3-0S37 excited by the 26 Dec. 2004 Sumatra earthquake are exactly obtained with the method of power spectrum density estimation.After comparing it with the periods of the theoretical free oscillation calculated with the PREM model it is found out that the observed period coincides with the theoretical.Except for the 0S3,0S4,0S5,0S6 and 0S10 that their relative error between the observed period and the theoretical ones is more than 0.2%,for the most of the others the relative error is about 1%.

78 DETECTING FREE OSCILLATION OF EARTH BY USE OFOBSERVATIONS OF EXTENSOMETER

With power spectrum density estimation method, we extract the spheroidal free oscillation of fundamentalfrequency(0S3~0S26) of the earth excited by the M9.0 SumatraAndaman great earthquake on 26 December 2004 from the data of digital extensometer at Yunlong seismostation in Yunnan province and at Taian seismostation in Shandong province without eliminating the earth’s tide. Comparing the period of the extracted oscillation with that of the theoretical oscillation by using the Preliminary Reference Earth Model (PREM), it is found that they are accordant with each other.

Using the mobilely gravimetric data from 2005 to 2009,
the dynamic changes of the gravity field in the South Tianshan Mountain area of Xinjiang is analyzed, and its patterns by year are given.
Furthermore,combined with time series of gravity difference value and computed GPS data the intrinsic relations between the gravity and strain fields and the Ms6.8 earthquake on Oct.5,2008 in the west to Wuqia are analyzed.At last,the response of local gravity field to tectonic conditions is analyzed as well.
It is shown that the change of gravity field is related to the minidynamic activity of local stressstrain field,i.e. the change of gravity reflects the precusory change feature of the gravity source caused by the strain field change.

Starting with the research on the basic characteristics of tectonic, neotectonic and the activity of dominating Quaternary fault in the southeast of Hunan province, the regional seismotectonic environment was analyzed. It is recognized that during the neotectonic movement period, the crust has mainly undergonely entire and slowly elevated movement along with intermittence uneven elevated movement. The regional faults generally occured in the Quaternary and some in the mid-Pleistocene, but there are no distinctive activities nowadays, and the regional tectonic setting is slightly affected by them.

105 ANALYSIS OF DISTURBANCE CHARACTERISTICS FROM RAINFALLON TILT TIDE DEFORMATION AT WUHAN SEISMOSTATION

The disturbance patterns of the tiltmeter observation of VS and DSQ at Wuhan station during the period of “Tenth Five Year Project” were studied. It is found that the rainfall and other factors may have the serious effect on the tide distortions. By analyzing the abnormal phenomena of the tilt tide curves, it seems that above anomalies arised from rainfall osmosis bringing about the expansion of base rock.
It can be seen that there is a close correlation between the tile tide aberration and rainfall.
The disturbance curve configuration is complicated and of 3 types. On the view of time there is synchronization that the NS component of tilemeter trends to S as well as the EW component to W after the rainfall.On the view of quantity it is found that NS component is disturbed by rainfall more seriously than EW component as well as VS tiltmeter is disturbed by rainfall more seriously than DSQ tiltmeter.

116 TIDAL DISTURBANCE OBSERVED AT HUANGMEI STATION DURING SOLAR ECLIPSE,2009

The total solar eclipse took place on July 22, 2009 in Yangtze River basin of China is the most important, the longest total eclipse of this century, that the maximum duration of totality reaches 6 minutes 39 seconds. The Huangmei tide observation station having three sets of tide observation instruments is located in the region. A little disturber was found during the total eclipse. The disturber in the north-south direction of the extensometer is about 27.6×10-10 and in the eastwest direction
about 9.52×10-10. The disturbers in the water tube tiltmeter and in the northsouth direction of the broadband vertical pendulum tiltmeter are about 0.862 millisecond and 1.84 millisecond respectively. The temperature, pressure and rainfall observation data during the total solar eclipse are considered and it is found that there are the strong correlation between these disturbers and temperature change.

The geological hazards, such as landslide, are widely distributed in the Three Gorges reservoir area.
High precision deformation monitoring is important to the geological hazards monitoring and earlywarning. Taking WushanWanzhou area for example, the application of GPS to the landslide monitoring is introduced and the experimental studies of InSAR and AE technologies in landslide monitoring have been developed. The geological hazards wireless remote monitoring system based on GPRS is developed, and it is proved that this system is applicable in the engineering field.

The results of the geomagnetic test around Wuhan first city light railline indicate that the moving of trains on the city railcar disturbs the environment of geomagnetic observation and the influence basically disappears by 10 kilometers from the railcar line. The disturbance results from the leakage of electric current by railway and transmit electricity line.

A new concept about the unbalanced crustal solid encircle presure and encircle pull locating and concentering principle in the earth gravity field is proposed.According to the concept the maximum crcustal oblique sliding force concentration amount can make the matter quality source reach the magnitude of all quality of pure solid crust,in theory.Tus we have discovered the first force source which could not be found in the past work about force source for geological evolution.Furthermore,we point out that there exist the circulation of solid and liquid in the crust and mantle under the action of a number of force for example,the oblique sliding force,expounds and proves six kinds of geological regions based on the geological evolution of ‘circulation of solid and liquid’ and further divides the geological boundaries based on nine kinds of seismogenesis.

157 HOW TO CONSTRACT VPDN PLATFORM IN EARTHQUAKE NETWORK SYSTEM OF HUBEI PROVINCE

There is a great need for about 100 stations of the earthquake administration of Hubei province to transmit information by use of the wireless network system.Early,the homemade VPN network was used,by which the transmission velocity is much affected by internet,so the velocity was very slow,even we could not moniter the instruments in real time,could not often receive the data on time,and thus could not report the data to state station network center on time.At present,the business of the seismic network system of Hubei province has extended and it needs improving the data transmission network to cover the whole Hubei and to support the anmared precursor system,mobile seismometry system and mobile office system.Seeing that,the department of earthquake information network of Hubei province,after analyzing the geographic location of each brouch point and their demands,decided to constract the VPDN network system for monitoring the seismic data of Hubei province by use of the wireless VPDN of China Telecom.Thereby,the sofety of data transmission,reporting the observations in real time and the analysis and prediction of earthquake on time can be guaranted.

The seismic test for the information processing cabinet of the seismic instrument system WYD1 is introduced.For the test using a 3D vibration table and adopting the multifrequency test mode of the artificial history which is campatible to the response spectrum of the floor on which the equipment is installed,we detected the white noise and carried out the tests of OBE(operational base earthquake) five times and the SSE(safety shutdown earthquake) one time.These tests proved that the seismic instrument system WYD1 can work normally under the effect of earthquake load.

The equipment reported here takes 51 monolithic integrated circuits as control core,and uses the DDS chip to produce the 100 kHz sine wave signal. It uses the difference output to drive the input level of differential motion transformer, through testing the voltages of the transformers two sencondary coils and carries on computation processing of the two voltages, thus the displacement value is obtained. After the ingenious selection of direct current machine and motordriven electric circuit,
magnetic rod’s precise closedloop control is completed very well.The control precision can reach to 0.5 mm.

Extensometer has been used in crustal deformation observation for many years, but it still has a good prospect of application in engineering. Although the present amplifier circuit has high precision, it has the limitations in engineering applications because of its high cost and circuit complex. A new design of amplifier circuit using Linear Variable Differential TransformerAD598 is introduced, which has many advantages,such as simplicity, reliablity and low cost in engineering application.
