Abstract UsingtheKrigingmethodtointerpolatethespatiallyirregularscatteredGPSvelocitydatatouniform gridvalues,andthencalculatethestrainrateforeachvolumeelement,thusthestrainratefieldsofChinacontinent andadjacentareashaveobtained.Futhermore,alargernumberofindependentcalculationsofstrainratesarerepeat edfromGPSvectorswithmeasurementerrors,andthecomponentsofmeanstrainrates,aswellastheerrors,are obtainedstatisticallybyMonteCarlotechnique.Theresultsshowthatthemagnitudesofthestrainratesinthewest oftheChinacontinentare3-5timesgreaterthanthoseintheeastChina.Theorientationsofprincipalstrainrates areingoodagreementwiththoseofPaxisandTaxisoffocalmechanisms.Thedistributionofmaximum shear strainratedelineatessomemajoractivefaultzonessurroundingtheTibetanplateau.Thetensilestrainratesinthe interioroftheTibetareconsistentwiththeextensionaltectonics.Alsotheanalysisofthestrainrateerrorssuggests thattheerrorsofthestrainratescomputedfromGPSmeasurementsaremainlyoriginatedfromtheerrorsofGPSda ta.TheaccuracyofGPSsurveydoesnotmeettherequirementsforpreciselycomputingthestrainratesintheregion where,forexample,intheeastChinathedeformationissmall.
