Abstract The spatial cylindrical surface fitting by using genetic algorithm is proposed. Taking a practical cylinder surface fitting as example, the principle and method of spatial cylindrical surface fitting based on genetic algorithm is explained. The necessity of application of cylinder fitting to tunnel section convergence monitoring is discussed and data acquisition method is proposed. An engineering example is used to show the feasiblity and effectiveness of the proposed method.
