Abstract:The historical earthquake catalogues(M≥4.5)and 1970—2010 earthquake catalogues(M≥1.0)in western Hubei and its surrounding areas are analyzed with the methods of physical fractal and R/S analysis. Accordingly,the natural cycle, fractal dimension and fractal scaleless range form every subset of small earthquakes are obtained,and the Hurst exponent (0.79) of earthquake frequency sequences and Hurst exponent (0.87) of earthquake timing interval sequences are obtained as well. Thereby the selfsimilarity and hierarchical structure of these earthquakes are revealed.
